What is a realistic safari-packing-list?
What to Pack for a Tanzania Safari: The Honest Guide
Most packing lists you’ll find online were written by people who’ve never sat in a Land Cruiser for six hours or stood at 5,895 metres on Kilimanjaro in borrowed gloves. This one wasn’t.
Here’s what you actually need - and what you can leave at home.
The Golden Rule: Less Is More
You will be moving between camps and lodges. Luggage fees on bush flights are real (typically 15 kg max on light aircraft), porters have limits, and a huge suitcase is a liability on dusty tracks. Use a soft-sided duffel bag, not a hard-shell roller.
Clothing
Tanzania sits on the equator, but don’t pack for a beach holiday. Mornings in the Serengeti at 6 AM can be cold. Ngorongoro Crater often sees temperatures of 10–15°C. Evenings cool down fast.
What to bring:
- 3–4 pairs of lightweight, neutral-coloured trousers or zip-off pants (khaki, olive, tan - not white or blue)
- 2–3 long-sleeved shirts (sun and mosquito protection)
- 2–3 short-sleeved shirts for midday
- A fleece or lightweight down jacket
- A waterproof outer layer (essential February–March and November)
- Comfortable walking shoes or light boots - nothing new and untested
- Sandals for the lodge
- Wide-brimmed hat
- Buff or neck gaiter for dust
- Sunglasses with UV protection
- Underwear and socks for each day - these dry fast on a wash line if you bring a few less Leave behind: Black or dark blue clothing (it attracts tsetse flies). Anything white (impractical). Formal wear unless you’re spending time in Zanzibar.
Gear & Tech
Camera: If you shoot seriously, bring what you know. A telephoto of at least 300mm is not optional if you want frame-filling wildlife shots. If you have a 100–400mm zoom, that’s your workhorse. Bring more memory cards than you think you need and at least one extra battery. Dust is everywhere - bring lens cloths and a blower.
Other essentials:
- Binoculars are not necessary. Our cars come with bino’s.
- Headlamp with spare batteries
- Universal travel adapter (Tanzania uses UK-style Type G plugs)
- Power bank for charging in the field
- Dry bags or ziplock bags for electronics during dusty drives
Health & Hygiene
Tanzania requires malaria prophylaxis for most safari areas. Start this before you leave home - ask your travel doctor or GP at least 4–6 weeks before departure.
Pack:
- Prescription malaria tablets (Malarone or Doxycycline - discuss with your doctor)
- DEET-based insect repellent (50%+ concentration)
- High-SPF sunscreen (UV at altitude and equator is aggressive)
- Lip balm with SPF
- Hand sanitiser
- Basic first-aid kit: blister plasters, antihistamine, ibuprofen, anti-diarrhoea medication
- Any personal prescription medication - pack double what you need, split between bags
- Rehydration sachets
- Yellow Fever certificate if transiting through or coming from endemic countries (required for entry into Tanzania in some cases)
Documents & Essentials
- Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates
- Tanzania e-Visa (apply before departure at evisa.immigration.go.tz)
- Travel insurance documents - make sure it covers medical evacuation, which in remote areas is a real expense
- Yellow Fever vaccination card if applicable
- Copies of all documents stored separately and digitally
What You Don’t Need
- Hair dryer (most lodges have one, and honestly, it’s a safari)
- Formal clothing
- More than 2 pairs of shoes
- A full pharmacy - most lodges have basics
- Lots of cash in USD - you’ll use less than you expect if your safari is pre-paid
A Note on Zanzibar
If you’re combining safari with Zanzibar (and you should - it’s worth it), pack light summer clothes and swimwear separately in a small day bag you can split off. Stone Town is a conservative Muslim area: cover shoulders and knees when walking around town.
